- Public outreach
- Virtual field trips/excursions
- Digital Twins
Virtual 3D models and digital outcrops are inherently 3D - why snapshot everything into a 2D slideshow?

Virtual Field Trips & Excursions
LIME 3D Stories were developed for building virtual field trips (VFTs) and excursions. Too easily, working with digital outcrop or other 3D models results in an unstructured set of 3D models, supplementary datasets and interpretations that are difficult to communicate, share or use for training.
LIME lets your organise your data into repeatible Views - snapshots of the 3D scene showing exactly what you want when you want - as the basis for making VFTs.
Create Sections representing field stops, localities, geoscience themes, exercises and more. If you like, you can add captions to the Views with overview text. You can also use Points to link explanatory movies, photos, websites, field guides or other content. Panels can be used creatively for diagrams, screenshots, figures, intro slides and more to build up your VFT.

Free LIME Viewer
LIME can be run in Viewer mode so you can easily share your 3D presentations and virtual field trips.
- Project exporter to prepare your project for sharing
- Anyone can install the LIME Viewer and open your project read-only
- Make measurements and navigate the 3D Story
- IT admins can deploy LIME in Viewer mode for classrooms. This can be handy if you do not want participants to have all LIME functionality available - no distractions!

Complement the field - and new possibilities!
LIME 3D Stories are a great way to build novel virtual field trips to complement existing field teaching and excursions. Introduce localities and the trip purpose before you reach the field to maximise the efficiency of limited field time. Use a VFT project to recap learning outcomes after a day in the field. Revisit the field virtually after returning from the field to make new observations and refresh learning - again and again!
We are not always able to travel to the field to observe geology and geoscience. Fortunately, the wealth of 3D models and datasets available mean we can use mini tours to see the best examples of geology around the world. We can combine data to make new visualisations from perspectives not possible in the field.

How does it work?
The 3D Story functionality can be used from the moment you have loaded your first 3D dataset.
Capture Views in the 3D Story tree whenever you want - for example an overview of your locality, or from a perspective that shows an interesting feature. At any point you can go back to the same View. All the visible data (e.g. annotations, panels, 3D models) is remembered, and all the visual settings are saved too: essentially a snapshot of the 3D scene at the time you captured the View.
You can also add animation paths, as well as Sections to organise the structure of your 3D Story, for example by locality or by theme.
Once you have made a 3D Story, you can present it yourself in the fullscreen presentation mode, or even share your project with others to use with the Free LIME Viewer.
3D Story Features
LIME has a number of features to help you build attractive 3D Stories and virtual field trips:
- Project importer to reuse content from other projects, or base new projects on existing content
- Auto playback of 3D Stories: for demo, exhibition or kiosk setups
- Fullscreen presentation mode
- Save Views remembering current visibility and visual settings of all elements in the 3D scene
- Add Views with or without animation
- Create animation paths integrated into the 3D Story
- Update existing Views, reorder, rename etc using the 3D Story tree

LIME 3D Stories Make it Possible
From presentation of a single 3D model - to digital recreation of an entire multi-day, multidisciplinary geoscience field excursion - LIME 3D Stories scale to your project needs.
